About City Dance
City Dance was founded in 2003 by Sandy Lee. We started at 10 Chase Court, San Francisco, which was a beautiful and magical space that we shared with City Ballet School for 15 years. We added our Annex location in 2010 at 1420 Harrison Street and this gave us two more studios in SOMA. In 2018 our primary location was demolished to make way for a luxury condo tower so we leased a charming old wooden warehouse at 1144 Howard Street. Soon after our we opened that building in October of 2019, the pandemic closed us down. This was a very challenging time but we took another risk by signing a new lease at 60 Brady Street in October of 2021 and this fantastic space, together with The Annex are where we are currently holding classes. 60 Brady has truly been a dream space with super tall ceilings and cool industrial architecture that also allows us to host our own performances and battles. We are still building back up to full strength after the pandemic but we love the way our community is growing!
City Dance specializes in a fantastic selection of Hip Hop Choreo classes taught by the best of the best artists in the Bay Area. We also offer many urban dance forms such as Popping, House, Breaking, Locking, Tutting and Hip Hop Freestyle. In addition we have a growing selection of Jazz, Tap, KPOP and Contemporary dance classes.
Our instructors are highly accomplished dancers and excellent/caring teachers. It's very important to us that City Dance feels like a welcoming community to everyone who comes through our doors.
We are also well known for hosting some of the best dancers in the world for master classes. We have attracted students from as far away as Japan, Russian, Europe, South America and Australia to attend classes offered by Mr. Wiggles, Buddha Stretch, Marjory Smarth, Caleaf Sellers, Salah, Les Twins, Ejoe Wilson, Brooklyn Terry, Poe One, Iron Monkey, Kid David, SBR, Suga Pop, Ian Eastwood, Mariel Martin, Jillian Meyers, Tony Testa, Larkin Poynton, Boogie Frantick, King Charles, Slim Boogie, the dancers from NDT2 and many more!
Three times a year we produce shows where students perform with their instructors and other world class guest artists. These shows are becoming more and more popular among students and they create lifelong memories for the groups who work so hard together.
In February of 2015, we presented “Nederlands Dance Theater 2” to a sold out house at the Palace of Fine Arts. We also offered master classes where students learned choreography from the show taught by dancers from the company. It was a wonderful experience and we hope to bring more world class companies to the bay area in the future.
